Beavers - Types of badges and how to earn them

There are a few different types of badges:

Photo Type of Badge Description
Badges earned at investment. This is the world scout membership badge, and badges identifying the area and group the Beaver belongs to. The large purple diamond badge goes on the necker
Activity badges These are round yellow badges, which only Beavers can earn. Cubs and Scouts have their own activity badges. When a child moves up to Cubs, these do not move up to the cub uniform. We recommend moving them to a camp blanket.
Staged badges These are round blue badges, which are available at different stage levels, and can be earned throughout a child's time in the scouting movement. You can earn a level and then later earn a higher level. You don’t have to have done the lower levels to get a higher level. An example is swimming - you can either do the requirements, or you can automatically get certain levels with certain swim england certificate levels. There are staged badges for nights away as well. It is normal for only the highest stage you have earned to be on your jumper. These badges move up to the cub uniform.
Challenge badges These are red hexagonal badges we work on throughout a child's time in Beavers. There are 6 (Outdoors, Adventure, Skills, Teamwork, Personal Challenge, World). We are pretty good at getting most children all of their challenge badges during their time in Beavers, however one of the requirements for the Adventure badge is to go on a Beavers camp or sleepover - this is usually the only obstacle we face in getting all the badges! These do not move up to the cub uniform.
Bronze Award This is the highest award a Beaver can earn. We work to get each child to earn this before moving up to cubs. To get this, you need to earn all of the challenge badges and at least 4 activity or staged badges. Your Bronze Scout Award can be moved up to your cub uniform until you earn the Silver Scout Award (the cub equivalent)
Joining in badges These are square badges, earned for every year a child is in the scouting movement. Some of our young leaders have had their Joining in level 8 badge, having started in Beavers!
Blanket badges These are fun extra badges, which do not go on the uniform, but on a camp blanket. These may be earned, bought at a scouting event or camp, or just bought for fun! Your child may be given one of these if they come to a camp, or if we earn one in a meeting.

Please do ask the leaders before starting doing badgework at home - we may be planning to do them in meetings, and we need to buy the badge to be able to give to them!

Camp Blankets

Camp blankets are a longstanding scouting tradition. They are essentially memory blankets. You can add many things to a camp blanket, e.g:

  • Swimming badges (e.g. Swim England Awards)
  • Blanket badges
  • Badges you earned in Beavers when you move up to cubs etc
  • Brownie or Rainbow badges if you are also in Guides.
  • Anything else you want!!

You can use any blanket for this - mine is about £7 from trespass - you don’t need the expensive scout branded ones!
